  • Nameless Rites – Gary M JamesNameslessRites_01_Thumbnail

As a boy the artist would day-dream out of the window towards the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya as Rider Haggard’s
“King Solomon’s Mines” was read to the class.  Add to that a sea cave on the coral coast, entered underwater and lit
by a leafy overhead opening and the artists youthful tight rope walking hobby and [...]

  • The Entomologist and the Prawn Salesman II – Gary M JamesThe Entomologist and the Prawn Salesman

Whilst reading Ian Fleming’s “Dr No” shortly after its publication, in a similar tropical setting, an elderly fisherman
arrived at the artist’s banda selling “prunes” (sic).  In this story though, the young lady wearing the  tools of her
trade is the entomologist.  The ruins allude to the “Lost City of Gedi” not long discovered in forest on [...]

A baraza (meeting) hall.  A speculative structure of mangrove poles, sisal rope, coir matting and clay based on a sea urchin shell.  Sub-title “The Long Elephant” for the howdah half covering a pair – who have bundles of sugar cane as persuaders.

    UpTheNile_Thumbnail_CC

re-routed for our voyage to the interior of Africa as it picks  up water from the Nile.

Awaiting the Passing of the Ants

In the forested caldera of an extinct volcano, the fabled “Graveyard of the Elephants”, a sangoma (medicine man)
takes refuge with companion primates from an unusually large and irate swarm of siafu ants.

    RiverMarket_Thumbnail_CC

Not far from Karen Blixon’s (“Out of Africa”) farm a river ran from the same Ngong Hills through the artist’s childhood garden.  Here it becomes a pan-African market with tall cliffs at the confluence of two rivers.

  • A View from the Gallery – Gary M JamesView from the Gallery

Here we look back from the Cliffside gallery of River Market towards the opposite bank and the viewpoint for that original scene up behind the dracaena (the palm-like plant). In the original, the central  pole is in partial bas relief and the hand rail is a hollowed half log.

  • Forecast – Gary M James
    (Royal Academy 1991)
    Forecast

The forecast alluded to is matrimonial, not meteorological as some have thought.  The “runes” are being
cast by a sangoma whose chamber is built into the fork of a low branching baobab tree.  Below, the
chauffeur awaits the return of the (palm) oil magnate and his bride.
